Overdressed or Underdressed? What to Wear When

Have you heard of the saying “Clothes Make A Man”? This is another way of saying that we are judged or perceived on how we look. It may sound superficial, however proper etiquette dictates that one must know how to dress appropriately.

Any normal parent would want their children to look their best at any given time. Some parents are conscious when it comes to branded clothes. This is how our fashion sense started. Parents would dictate to us the clothes we should wear on what occasion. If it’s Church day, we put on our Sunday’s best, if it’s a children’s party, we were clothes that will allow us to run and frolic with the other kids. As we grow old, our taste in fashion changes, however, we still have that notion of trying to look our best.

When is it considered Overdressed or Underdressed? How do we choose the type of clothes to wear?

  1. Dress Code. If there is a Dress Code noted, then it is a must to comply. Let’s say the invitation you received is for a Black Tie or White Tie event, this requires Formal Attires. A Tuxedo is the best choice for Men’s wear and for Women’s clothing, a sophisticated long gown is the best choice for the invite. A cocktail dress is also acceptable.

  2. Weddings. Remember, this is the Bride’s day, do not upstage her. Leave the color white and anything bridal gown looking alone. Check the venue of the wedding, if it’s a destination wedding, or church wedding, match your outfit to what is appropriate to the location. If you plan on repeating a dress that you wore from a previous wedding,

  3. Job Interview. It all depends on the type of work you are trying to land. If it’s a bank position, then wearing super tight or short clothes may be out of the question. If you are trying to land a position as Fashion Editor, then definitely, dress to impress.

  4. Work Attire. Dressing comfortably should not equate to being lax with your fashion style. Going back to item number 1, if there’s a Dress Code at work, it should be complied with. Remember, your workplace should exude professionalism and integrity. Factor in the type of place you work at. It will hard to gain respect if your a teacher and wear a revealing outfit in a kindergarten class.

  5. Weather Appropriate Clothes. Before stepping out of your house, check if what your wearing will survive the day’s weather. Power Dressing in a strong hurricane is not the right timing. You wouldn’t want your mules or loafers drench in the rain.

It does not matter what age, size or gender you are, your Fashion sense will continue to evolve. Am I overdressed or underdressed should not be the question here, but how do you feel with how you look? It’s nice to “doll-up” every now and then and wear your heart's content even if you’re just going to the supermarket.

How you present yourself fashionably may be an acquired taste for others, but then again, dressing up is a reflection of who you are. It is an expression of your personality and how you feel that day. Overdressing or Underdressing is just a state of mind. Is it comfortable? Does it make you smile when you look at the mirror? Then go for it.
